Description

Objectives
In the framework of the “Tacis Nuclear Safety Programme”, it was decided to increase the safety of workers in the BN-350 NPP (fast breeder) in Aktau, Kazakhstan against Sodium risk by providing Sodium fire protective clothing. The clothing was intended for workers in premises where handling and experiments on Sodium are carried out and should be worn permanently while working in these premises.
The clothing comprised of:
• A set of underwear (long-sleeved under-shirt, long underpants, balaclava, socks, under-gloves, all made of NOMEX Jersey)
• Overalls with hood in serge
• Helmet with face shield
• A pair of gloves
• A pair of rubber boots
The clothing had to provide total protection against solid Sodium and liquid Sodium at less than 250C without spray, partial protection against liquid Sodium at less than 250C with spray and minimum protection against liquid Sodium of more than 250C.
Project Results
The company VTN of France was chosen as supplier after competitive tendering. The contract with VTN started on the 14th January 1998 and ended on the 8th December 1998 following the successful delivery of the clothing.
