Project Aims
- The overall objective of this project was to contribute to increasing of nuclear safety in the country;
- The specific objective was to provide assistance to the Bulgarian nuclear safety authority in improving management of entire lifecycle of sealed radioactive sources.
Project Results
Development of a full scope of documentation necessary for safe management of the sealed radiation sources (SRS) in the country. This inclided:
- Development of regulations in the area of operational safety of SRS;
- Identification of the methodological approach and the technical specification for the equipment and instrumentation needed to periodically check the physical state of the SRS;
- Development of national registry of the SRS and relevant regulations to ensure full traceability of the SRS during their entire life cycle;
- Development of procedures for transport of disused SRS from their users to the central facility for their storage and disposal;
- Identification of requirements for safe storage and disposal of disused SRS;
- Definition of actions to establish liability for SRS in the case of users disappearance;
- Proposal of regulatory measures to provide for the safe management of orphan sources.
The budget for this project was: 550 000 euro.
