Objective

The project aimed at elaborating a coordinated methodology for classification and qualification of safety related equipment and control systems and at developing recommendations for those equipment and control systems to meet requirements resulting from mentioned classification and qualification. This will allow classification and qualification of the equipment of Russian NPPs on their functions, relations to safety and operational conditions.
The project took into account the international standards, the Russian standards and the relevant standards and experience of Western countries.

Result

The planned outputs were obtained in accordance with the requirements of the TOR/Inception Report.
As the final result the project produced new guiding documents for the Beneficiary for classification and qualification of actuators, Instrumentation and Control (I&C) in VVER 1000 type NPPs, updated to conform to international requirements. Outputs, which included more than 1000 items, were a list of equipment with associated requirements and an Equipment Qualification list for VVER 1000/320, facilitating a comprehensive assessment of the present qualification status.

As a result, the qualification for most of the equipment, except 21, could be approved. This gives a good picture about the actual situation, thus allowing clear recommendations for maintaining qualification later on. The Beneficiary was satisfied with the result obtained.

Specific objectives can be considered as achieved. The project was able to evaluate the initial qualification of the electrical and I&C equipment on the VVER 1000 units and identify further actions needed to cope with eventual shortcomings. The updated classification and qualification guides taking into account international practice could be issued.

The involvement of the Russian Safety Authorities (GAN) ensured the quality of the results. Corresponding regulatory guidelines of GAN are under preparation well in synchronization with the results of this project. The project also transferred important knowledge about the Russian classification and qualification status to the EU experts, thus removing some fears.

The present picture, including the recommendations for future actions, can be considered as very realistic.
