Project Aims

  • This project aims to specify a conceptual design for a model type of concrete vault for near-surface disposal, based on experience from radioactive waste management in the EU. A conceptual design for an integral facility within this vault for interim storage of long-lived radioactive waste will be drafted ready for a future construction Project.
  • The results are aimed to contribute to the elaboration of strategies to be followed by the Ministry for Environmental Protection and Regional Development for disposal both of highly active institutional waste, as well as waste from dismantling of the Salaspils facility.

Project Results

The Project included a critical review of methodologies and results from similar radioactive waste disposal activities undertaken in EU countries to meet local (EU national) standards.Specific results were:

  • Identification of potential (practical) construction materials and technologies, as well as a disposal and storage strategy for Latvia. These were evaluated based, firstly, upon experience from operation of relevant facilities in the EU. In this evaluation technical, logistical and economic issues specific to Latvia were also taken into account.
  • After agreement with the beneficiary on basic principles to be followed, a detailed conceptual design for storage/disposal vaults was produced. The level of detail in the design is such that it could be readily implemented at Baldone, once various site-specific technical issues are resolved. This design would also be available for application to similar radioactive waste storage facilities in other candidate countries.

The budget for this project was: 100 000 euro.
