Project Aims
Based on preliminary studies, this project aimed at assessing the possibility and then implementing a new storage route for SNF. This route consisted of storing spent nuclear fuel SNF in dry conditions in a dedicated container (so called encapsulation), itself contained in the shaft of the decommissioned EWA reactor, which provided shielding. The storage conditions that would stop the corrosion rate of encapsulated SNF were to be determined. The project comprised both development works and purchase of specified equipment and instrumentation.
Project Results
The following tasks have been completed:
- Review of the existing documentation on the dry storage option for SNF;
- Analysis of the applicability of the existing equipment for transporting SNF from wet ponds to dry storage;
- Development of the encapsulation technology in the EWA reactor hot chamber;
- Identification of the needs for instrumentation;
- Determination of the technical specifications for equipment;
- Setting-up of a procedure for quality control of the encapsulation technology;
- Safety analysis of the encapsulation technology;
- Purchase of specified equipment and instrumentation;
- Definition of work plan for the practical implementation of the new dry storage option;
- Approval of the plan by the NAEA;
- First trials of SNF transport and encapsulation
The budget for this project was: 1 000 000 euro.
