Project Aims

The main objectives of the project were:

  • To assess performance of the plant and the impact of grid frequency control mode operation (primary and secondary control) on the safety and operational life of the plant;
  • To assess the implications of operating the plant in tertiary control mode.

Project Results

The following analyses have been performed :

  • Review of the UCPTE technical specifications to define the limiting grid support transients for which the plant will be required to respond. For the main study, operation of the plant in primary and secondary grid frequency control modes only were considered;
  • The analysis of the response of the plant to the grid frequency excursions for which a plant response is required. The limiting conditions to be considered in coincidence with faults, and the faults to be considered were identified. In addition, the most onerous plant response to any grid frequency tansient was identified;
  • Performance of perform analysis of the identified faults in coincidence with grid frequency control mode operation, and assessment of the impact of grid frequency control mode operation on the overall plant safety and operational life;
  • Identification of any design or operational procedure changes that are required to support the demonstration of an acceptable safety case for grid frequency control mode operation. In addition identification of those changes which would significantly reduce the impact of grid frequency control mode operation on the design life of the plant;
  • Based on the project results recommendations were provided for possible design changes and changes to operating procedures to limit the impact of frequency control mode operation on the plant and maximize the long term operational life of the plant.
