Project Aims

The main objective of the project was to assist in establishing the legal framework in
Latvia
, and train human resources for implementation of requirements of Council Directive 97/43/Euratom and ensure the safe use of the medical radiology equipment both by the personnel and the patients.

The specific objective of the project was to assist in preparation of national regulations on technical surveillance of radiological equipment used in medical practice, including upgrade of the old equipment in a reference standards laboratory. The project aimed at providing also a comprehensive programme of education, building upon national experts qualified as a result of previous Phare assistance programmes.

Project Results

The project provided assistance to sstrengthen capabilities of the State-operated Health Statistics and Medical Technology Agency (HSMTA) that is involved in elaborating safety requirements for different health care institutions and licensing the medical use of ionising radiation sources in
Latvia
. The work programme included:

  • Critical review and expertise of relevant national regulations, comparison with EU requirements, drafting harmonised national regulations.

  • Training staff of a technical surveillance; strengthening of this unit by supplying necessary hardware, software and equipment (this is a substantial fraction of the equipment supply request).

  • Education and training of medical staff and technical personnel of medical radiology in compliance with Directive 97/43/EURATOM.

  • Assessment and improvement of various aspects of the QA/QC for medical radiology, including supply of modern hardware, software and other equipment.

The budget for this project was: 1 650 000 euro.
