Project Aims

The main purpose of this project was to produce two safety reports related to respectively the operation, and closure of the Rózan disposal facility. The operating phase report should integrate all recent data generated concerning the safety of the site. It should notably define a re-mediation concept for those parts of the site that were affected, in a recent past, by releases of tritium. The closure report should be in line with international safety recommendations for radioactive waste management. Both reports should be then submitted to the National Authorities for approval.

Project Results

The following activities were considered under the project:

• Review of the existing safety documentation for the disposal site;
• Establishment of inventory of all types of radioactive waste currently stored and/or disposed in the facility;
• Determination of safety objectives;
• Analysis of the variations in the tritium concentration observed in the ground water found around the site;
• Development of technical specification for re-mediation of tritium releases;
• Development of specifications for a long-term monitoring programme;
• Updating of the safety report for the final closure of the facility;
• Review of the safety reports by stakeholders.
