Joint IAEA/ EC Course on Safe Transport of Radioactive Materials

Joint IAEA/ EC Course on Safe Transport of Radioactive Materials

Description

Background
Both IAEA and EC have as goal to provide technical assistance to the Eastern Countries to improve nuclear safety and to support nuclear technology for peaceful applications. To fulfil this objective, the exchange and training of experts in the nuclear field was necessary. The experiences of previous training courses in the field of safe transport of radioactive materials (1994, 1995) had demonstrated the need to continue these efforts.
The present training course, organized with the support of Belgian authorities, was a continuation of this initiative.
Objectives
The areas covered by the course included:
-philosophy and provisions contained in IAEA Transport regulations and their supporting guides and technical documents
-implementation of the Transport regulations in the codes of international regulatory organizations for specific transport modes
-radiation protection concepts in relation to radioactive material transport, relating to: design of packages, testing for regulatory compliance purposes, preparation for transport, radiation protection controls, compliance and quality assurance, administrative procedures
-exchange of information regarding competent authority implementation of the regulations
Project Results
The course and the visits (maximum duration of 3 weeks) took place in Mol (Belgium).
The course involved lectures, practical exercises, discussions and technical visits.
Beneficiaries were officials of national regulatory bodies and managers, as technical staff from organizations undertaking the transport of radioactive materials. The programme of the theoretical lectures and of the visits was fixed by the IAEA and the European Commission in co-operation with the host country.
