Project Aims
This project addressed the assessments related to design and operational safety investigations performed for the PAKS-WWER 440/ 213 reactors at the time of the project. In order to improve the safety situation, a Hungarian Technical Safety Organization proposed a near term safety improvement program based, among others, on the IAEA recommendations given for VVER 440/213 reactors. This program and its implementation had to be reviewed the Hungarian Nuclear Safety Authority in order to verify that the plant will achieve an acceptable safety level to be allowed to operate further.
The main objective of this Phare project was to cooperate with and to assist the Hungarian Nuclear Safety Authority and its Technical Support Organization in some of the licensing assessments of the above mentioned improvement program of the PAKS NPP Units 1 to 4, and in particular in assessing the adequacy of supporting analysis and procedures for primary system depressurization needed in case of primary to secondary leaks events.
Project Results
The project considered the available results from relevant studies performed already for Paks NPP ( e.g from AGNES project) and reviewed and assessed those against further relevant analytical results or experimental data.
Three major tasks have been completed as follows:
- Based on already performed analytical results possible primary pressure reduction procedures following a steam generator primary collector rupture were assessed;
- Detailed analysis of the most effective procedures were performed by means of using PMK experiments and code calculations with the aim to demonstrate their applicability;
- Guideline for the development of an emergency operating procedure for steam generator rupture based on results of Tasks 1 and 2 was elaborated.
