Project Aims

  • The main objective of the project was to supply and fit a vibration monitoring system. The measurements weere needed to characterise the normal operational vibrations of RPV components. The system had also automatically to capture transient vibrations on a continuous basis. These measurements were needed identify any vibration-related problems. It might be necessary to make use of hydrodynamic test facilities to aid interpretation of the vibration measurements;
  • This vibration monitoring system had eventually to form part of a Reactor Internals Diagnostic System (RCDS). Other parts of the RCDS, not covered by this project, included Core Barrel Motion, Hot Fuel Assembly, Core Coolant Propagation and In-core Neutron Detector and Thermocouple Validation.

Project Results
The work performed under this project was:

  • List and review of existing design documents or incident reports that relate to vibrations or instabilities of RPV internal components. Carrying out a vibration assessment of the RPV internals;
  • Identification of the number, type and location of vibration transducers required and specify the critical features of the monitoring system to ensure that the overall project is carried out within the budget. Development of a vibration monitoring plan;
  • Production of an installation plan for the vibration monitoring system, together with detail drawings, support documents and Quality Plans;
  • Purchase / manufacture system hardware;
  • Production of data acquisition software for system computer(s);
  • Installation and commission the system;
  • Carrying out the vibration monitoring plan.

The start and end dates of the project as specified above are indicative only.
