Project Aims
The TMI and Chernobyl accidents have demonstrated the importance of operator guidance and training to manage and recover from accidental conditions. Training is even more important for power plants of older design where the Emergency Procedures are insufficiently developed. Training has two components:
1. team training to respond timely and according to a strict procedure; and
2. individual training in the deep understanding of the physical phenomena and plant behaviour.
For the first aspect, a full scope control room replica simulator is the best tool. For the second, a multifunctional simulator with graphical interface is adequate, the mathematical models of the second being identical to or more sophisticated than the models of the first one. While full scope control room replica simulators are expensive development of a multifunctional simulator with graphical interface is by far less costly.
With this background in mind the current multi-country project was lounched, which main aims were:
- to develop a pilot multifunctional simulator for one selected NPP (V230 or V213);
- to duplicate and have plant specific similar simulators installed at each NPP having V230 and/or V213 reactors;
- to develop a USERS GROUP methodology for data collection/data exchange;
- to provide on the job training for future instructors as part of the project during the development phase (software-hardware technology) and also on instructor's techniques in using a multifunctional simulator.

The project resulted in development of multifunctional simulators for the following plants:
