Project Aims
The general objective of the project was to support the current efforts of Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant in the area of severe accident management.
Specific objectives of activities under this project were:

  • The assessment of existing approaches to severe accident management worldwide and to propose the best applicable to Kozloduy;
  • To customise the severe accident definition to VVER plants;
    To develop specific KNPP databases in order to use them in calculation analyses;
  • To develop detailed severe accident management guideline (SAMG) for Kozloduy;
  • To review operational documents and operational emergency structures for consistency with the new SAMG.

Project Results
This project documented the results of the assessment of severe accident induced risks at the different units of Kozloduy NPP, analyses the possible ways to respond to these risks and gave recommendations for operators actions necessary to limit consequences of such accident. As part of the project SAMG were developed for VVER-440 and VVER-1000 units. In addition several recommendations for plant back fittings to be considered have been elaborated.
During the project close co-operation was established amongst all involved companies and local subcontractors which resulted in a very effective transfer of know-how. The Beneficiary Experts became fully acquainted with the plant behaviour under severe accident, the risks and the challenges related to severe accident situations and the strategies developed to respond to these challenges.
The budget for this project was: 2.500.000 euro.
