Project Aims

The main objective of the project was to perform probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) Level 1 study for units 3&4 of Kozloduy NPP. The study had to be completed taking into account the state-of-the-art methodology availabe for each PSA task and to use plant specific equipment reliability data. The results were aimed to support the plant management decission making on future plant safety imporovements.

Project Results

A PSA level 1 model for Kozloduy units 3&4 was developed , based on RISK SPECTRUM saftware.The project was completed mostly by Risk Engineering, Ltd. with support from Empresarios Agrupados. The scope of the model was such as to cover:

  • All internal initiating events;
  • Seismic and fire hazards;
  • Plant full power operation mode;
  • Reactor core as the only radiation hazard source ( e.g. risk from the operation of spent fuel pool was not evaluated).

The plant Core Damage Frequency (CDF) was calculated and the main contrubutors to the risk in terms of initiating events, safety system failures and human errors were idenified. The insights form the PSA study were used in the development of plant short- and long-term safety improvement programmes.

The start and end dates of the project as specified above are indicative only.
