Project Aims
The overall objective of this project was to assist Hungary in development and application of Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) Procedures for the Safe management of low and intermediate level radioactive waste (LILW) in Hungary.

The specific objective was to provide a technical assistance to the beneficiary in:

  • Development of generic approach for the application of QA/QC procedures for the safe management and disposal of LILW;
  • Checking and analysis of available QA/QC procedures in all organizations involved in radioactive waste generation and management in Hungary;
  • Examination of draft Quality Assurance Manual and selected procedures and instructions prepared by PURAM (the main beneficiary) and prepare recommendations for their improvement.

Project Results
Main project achievements are as follows:

  • The contractors prepared a document, providing the methodological conceptual guidance to develop QA and QC procedures for safe management and disposal of LILW in Hungary. A generic (integrated) approach was conceived to ensure that entire system from waste generation, through waste processing and storage till disposal in repository comply with the Waste Acceptance Criteria and other conditions derived from the safety analysis;
  • Using standard format and approach, prepared by the contractor, available QA/QC relevant practice in organizations, involved in radioactive waste generation and management were reviewed and recommendations for improvement and unification were prepared. Compliance with the national legislation system as well as with internationally accepted recommendations was verified;
  • Draft Quality assurance manual, prepared by PURAM was analysed and recommendations for improvement were provided;
  • Various drafts of existing PURAM procedures and instructions, related to QA/QC were carefully examined and comments to facilitate their improvements and harmonisation were provided. They were, in particular: PURAM working site radiation procedures, PURAM radioactive waste processing and storage plant operational procedures, PURAM procedures for transportation of radioactive waste, PURAM operational and maintenance procedures, Technology instructions for radioactive waste processing and storage, Training procedure and Handling of documents instruction;
  • Interactive workshop was organised in the final phase to disseminate the principal results to other Project co-beneficiaries countries: Slovakia, Slovenia, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Romania.

Project objectives have been met and the project was completed in time and in accordance with the work plan.
