Project Aims
The main objective of PHARE BG-9701-02-04-01 project was to assess the radioactive waste management situation in Bulgaria and prepare recommendations as appropriate for its improvement. Specifically, the particular objectives of the project were:
- to define the radioactive waste management institutional arrangement and harmonize its legislative base and standards;
- to review and propose a finalized solution for the intermediate and low level radioactive waste problem;
- to provide a feasibility study on the future of the Novi Han disposal Facility for low and intermediate level radioactive wastes and a study on the wastes arising from NPP Kozloduy;
- to provide a feasibility study on the disposal of low and intermediate level wastes in a new National facility;
- to define the necessary national regulations and standards;
- to define the structure, responsibilities and financial arrangements needed for establishment of a national radioactive waste management body.
Project Results
The main findings of the study were presented in a number of detailed reports and an Executive Summary was prepared on the main conclusions and recommendations of the study, set against each of the project tasks and objectives , as identified the project Terms of Reference. These main findings were grouped and presented in reports for each activity/ facility type as follows:
- Disposal of NPP waste;
- Existing Waste Disposal Facilities- Novi Han;
- Infrastructure, Financing and Public Acceptability.
