Project Aims

The overall objective of this project was to facilitate decommissioning of the nuclear facilities in ex- Soviet nuclear submarine training facilities in Paldiski. The specific objective of the project was to perform studies, design and construction works and provide for the improvements in the Paldiski sarcophagi building, which will garantee its safe functioning for at least 50 years.

Project Results

  • The site-specific geological studies was performed;
  • Ventilation systems for both sarcophagi and interim storage for adioactive waste was designed, types and technical specifications of necessary equipment were identified;
  • Environmental Impact Assessment for long term safe storage of RCs was performed;
  • Sarcophagi surveillance programme was prepared and implemented;
  • The technological main building (MTB) was decontaminated, size/volume of the building was reduced and durability against weathering was improved;
  • Sarcophagi structures were strengthened and confinement properties improved;
  • Ventilation system of Sarcophagi was installed

The budget for this project was : 1290 000 euro.
