Project Aims
Following the recommendations of a previous PHARE Project (Geophysical Research in the Surroundings of the Krsko NPP) finalized in September 2000, Slovenia decided to upgrade the seismic monitoring system in the vicinity of the Krsko NPP. A high density of seismic stations is particularly crucial in the regions with very shallow seismicity, as is the case for the region around Krsko NPP.
The purpose of the project was:
- to upgrade the seismic monitoring system in the area surrounding the Krsko NPP, with a view to decide on future locations for new stations to complement the existing seismic network;
- to provide two additional portable seismic stations to increase the coverage and complement the Slovenian seismic network (using resources under its national budget, Slovenia installed 4 fixed high-quality seismic stations in 2001);
- to perform pilot measurements with the procured mobile stations which were brought into service as part of a strategy implementation for determining the seismic characteristics of the Krsko basin.
Project Results
The project activities have been implemented as foreseen. Two portable seismic monitoring stations according to the Technical Specifications defined under the project were provided by Earth Data Limited, United Kingdom. The pilot operation and integration of these stations into Slovenian seismic network is supposed to be completed by the end of 2005.
The project contributed to the improvement of Slovenian seismic activity monitoring in the broader area of the Krško basin through enchancement of the local network of seismic monitoring stations.
