Objective

A total of 11 diesel generators are installed at Smolensk NPP, a Swiss (Sulzer) design, manufactured under license in Yugoslavia.
The operation has never been totally satisfactory, especially during start up when frequency fluctuations occur to an extent that the essential control and instrumentation system supply systems switch from/to battery back up supplies.
Due to the life of the plant (particularly units 1 and 2) and the difficulty of obtaining spare parts, increased maintenance is required to ensure plant availability.
An urgent problem exists with respect to the provision of some spare parts.

Within the project an engineering investigation was to be carried out on the plant to include plant operation, reliability and maintenance aspects and to consider the provision of possible plant diagnostics systems and spare parts, particularly those associated with the diesel generators of the first two units.

The diagnostic system to be supplied consists of 2 portable units, including desktop computer, analytical software and all necessary transducers and interfaces. The relevant training to operate the 2 systems was included.
