Smolensk NPP: Maintenance Information system (Gomis) Phase 2.1

Smolensk NPP: Maintenance Information system (Gomis) Phase 2.1

Description

Objective
The objective of this project was to improve the operational management and safety of Smolensk NPP by a Maintenance Information system (Gomis).
The project was intended in the same safety philosophy and like similar systems already in use at Scottish Nuclears Torness and Hunterston NPPs (Gomis system). The objectives of the project were:

  • To install computer hardware for a pilot scheme of an operations and maintenance information system at Smolensk NPP;
  • To establish and supervise data build up for the RBMK site at Smolensk NPP which can be extended to VVER sites;
  • To customize and install the software to meet specific requirements of Rosenergoatom and Smolensk NPP;
  • To train Smolensk NPP staff in the use of the system;
  • To complete the installation of the pilot project at Smolensk NPP.

The project included, amongst other items as mentioned above, the supply of a significant amount of IT hardware. The hardware supply was divided into different phases, as follows:
1. Phase 1 - Supply of basic hardware.
Phase 1 was contracted with Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) and comprised the supply of the server (VAX VMS computer), operating software, 40 PC workstations and 2 printers. The contract for the Phase 1 hardware was signed in December 1994. Installation of the equipment allowed the maintenance management software to be installed and the Smolensk NPP databases to be populated by the project team. The 40 PC workstations allowed the training of the SmNPP personnel to be performed and provided sufficient workstations for the project team for development purposes.
2. Phase 2 - Larger server, LAN and additional Workstations
Phase 2 was also divided into 2 parts:

  • Part 1 (Subject of the present contract): Supply of a larger server providing additional access points and a larger database. The contract was signed with CSS. The company delvered the equipment but went into receivership before the equipment could be installed. The installation was therefore performed by SmNPP personnel.
  • Part 2: Supply of LAN Network equipment and an additional 40 PC Workstations. This contract was also placed with CSS, but the company went into receivership before the equipment could be delivered. The contract was therefore cancelled. However, the equipment was finally purchased from DEC directly by the OSA Consultant, and the costs were reimbursed through the OSA Consultant contract.

Result
The Phase 2.1 hardware equipment (subject of the present contract) was delivered and contractual activities were completed in August 2000.
