Project Aims

• Strengthening of capabilities of the Slovenian Nuclear Safety Administration (SNSA) in responding to a nuclear or radiological accident/emergency.
• Improvement and expansion of the Early Warning System (EWS) network with a wider network of measuring stations in Slovenia for immediate detection of potential contamination in case of a nuclear or radiological accident in the country or abroad by upgrading the EWS and software for data transfer, archiving, analyzing, as well as alerting capabilities and with upgrading old radiological stations with meteorological measuring equipment and installing new one, and thus introduction of alarming/alerting and remote maintenance.
• Development of an integrated system with backup, capable of overcoming computer and power failures.
• Enhancement of isotope identification as field work.
• Achieving of a higher degree of overall reliability of the EWS.

Project Results

• Upgraded measuring equipment, radiological measuring stations equipt with modern meteorological equipment.
• Expanded network with new measuring points (both radiological and meteorological).
• Enhanced system reliability because of the new infrastructure which will provide backup.
• Equipped and tested EWS center integrated into the overall system, complete with introducted new capability for alarming/alerting of the duty officer using gsm/gprs mobile services and a palm-top computer and established on-line data transfer to to EURDEP and RODOS.
• The possibility of interruption of power source eliminated, thus vulnerability to power shortages, as well as provided on-site protection of measuring equipment will be diminished.
• Enhanced field work capabilities due to the purchased hand-held identifiers and staff trained for their handling.

The budget for this project was: 490 000 euro.
