Project Aims

The overall objective of this project was to assist Hungary in construction of the near surface repository for disposal of operational radioactive waste from Paks NPP.

The specific objective of the project was to provide technical support to the Hungarian Authorities in the decision-making process for the confirmation of the selected site for final disposal facility for the low and intermediate level nuclear waste (LILW) from Paks NPP, in particular in following issues:

  • Preparation of the site characterization program;
  • Conducting the site characterisation program;
  • Safety evaluation and safety assessment.

Project Results

This project was directly related to the Hungarian National Project on design and construction of the repository, in particular, to the phases I and II – selection and characterization of the site. The main targets of the project were hydro-geological characterization of the Űveghuta site and the preliminary safety assessment of the final repository for LILW from NPP Paks.

The technical support was given mainly in the following fields:

  • Collection of the data for site characterisation program, assistance in development of the technical specification for carrying out the hydro-geological testing campaign to obtain further data for detailed site characterisation;
  • Execution of hydrogeology tests in new boreholes drilled in summer 1998, assistance in interpretation of the results;
  • Interpretation of both, already existing data and the data from new tests, using SW tools used in Belgium - modelling of “near field” with PORFLOW code, “far field” with AQA 3D code, biosphere with BIO code and performing uncertainty analysis with LISA code;
  • Safety evaluation and preparation of a safety assessment report. Comparison of Hungarian safety evaluation methodology with internationally recognised EC EVEREST code and/or IAEA proposed within IAEA ISAM project;
  • Comparison and critical evaluation of results obtained independently by Hungarian institutes and contractors in co-operation with local sub-contractors to facilitate the decision making process.

Project objectives have been met and the project was completed in time and in accordance with the work plan.
