Project Aims
Within the scope of Seismic Hazard Reevaluation performed in 1996 for Paks Site a recommended safe shut down earthquake (SSE) Level was established and the ground conditions were investigated. Based on these actual site specific soil data as well as on the newly defined uniform hazard response spectra (UHRS), seismic analyses had to be performed for the plant ventilation stacks and for the buried emergency cooling water piping system. The main objectives of the PH2.12.95 project were:

  • Assessment of the earthquake resistance of the ventilation stacks taking into account soil structure interaction effects;
  • Evaluation and verification of the buried emergency cooling water piping system for seismic loading, when earthquake waves are passing through;
  • Transferring of know-how to the Beneficiary state in order to allow them in the future to perform similar work on their own.

Project Results

  • Ventilation stacks: Structural analyses/verifications have been made following Hungarian Standards for all corresponding structures. Verification of the base slab has not been performed, as a more complex structural model would be required. Suggestions have been made on further studies and improvements needed.
  • Buried pipelines: From the two sets of the emergency cooling water system the pipelines 02VY11 and 02VX51 representatively have been analysed and linear and non-linear analytical and finite element calculation models have been used. Suggestions have been made on further studies and improvements needed.
